Toddlers and Pre-schoolers(Ages 2 to 5)

One hold per square foot of climbing wall space. Toddlers and Preschoolers have excellent grips but little shoulder strength, so the holds need to be closer together.

Elementary (Ages 7 to 12)

One hold per square foot is recommended; however, Elementary-aged children have developed more upper-body strength and can reach farther than preschoolers, so you could space the holds farther apart up to one hold every 1.5 square feet. Doing so will increase the difficulty of the wall for younger kids in this age range, while older kids (early teens) will do okay with it.  If you want more variety in routes (paths up the wall), one hold per square foot is recommended.

High School (Ages 11 to 17)

One hold per square foot to 1.5 holds per square foot. High schoolers have developed muscle strength. Now, it's time to set the routes. You can space the holds further; however, if you want more variety in routes(paths up the wall), one hold per square foot is recommended. Check out our video on How to Set a Route.

8' Tall x 16' Wide

This layout has too few holds, with only 20 holds per panel. By adding more footholds and handholds, the wall will be much more enjoyable for climbers.
